IMS hosts third annual Easter Egg hunt

INDIANAPOLIS — There was a lot of action around turn three at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, but it didn’t involve IndyCars as one might expect.

Children of all ages raced to pick up as many Easter eggs as they could at the third annual IMS Kids Club Easter Egg Hunt.

According to IMS Public Relations Media Manager Tom Surber, there were about 30,000 eggs strewn about the infield for children to gather.

Surber said this was the third year for the event.

“The first two years, we did it over by turn two, but we needed more space because this thing has just grown like crazy,” he said. “So we brought it out here (to turn three) and it worked out very well.”

Surber said it was hard to pinpoint exactly how many showed up, but he was pleased with the turnout and the event overall.

“I know that as of Friday we had 1,000 registered ... it’s an IMS Kids’ Club event, but it was open to everybody,” he said. “We were blessed with great weather and it turned out to be a terrific event, so we’re very fortunate.”

Surber added going forward, he hopes both the event and the IMS Kids’ Club continue to grow.

“(For members of the club), there’s four or five events during the year and there’s special access to drivers — it’s really a neat deal,” he said.

The event was emceed by radio personality Laura Steele from Q95 and featured a special guest, IndyCar driver and Indianapolis native Ed Carpenter, who met with fans for photos and autographs after the Easter egg hunt. IndyCar driver Alex Tagliani was also on hand for the event.

“(Indy 500 or bust) that’s the name (motto) of it this year,” Carpenter told Steele after the egg hunt. “It’s always fun at the speedway even when I’m working ... it’s obviously a big crowd today so everyone in the community loves this place. May is going to be here before we know it and hopefully it’s a good one.”
