Club holds luggage drive for Jordan’s Place

By Brenda L. Holmes

AVON —

Members of the Exchange Club of Hendricks County are again be collecting suitcases and bags for Jordan’s Place in Brownsburg.

Jordan’s Place is an organization that helps newly fostered families gather supplies. The agency was founded and is operated by Terry and Ruth Blackburn, a husband/wife team. The Blackburns have been foster parents since retiring from the U.S. Navy in 2005. Jordan’s Place opened in ‘08.

Many children entering the foster system come with little to no possessions. What they do have is usually carried in small plastic shopping bags.

Jordan’s Place supplies items like clothing, bedding, and toys. One thing they really want to give each child is a piece of luggage they can call their own.

In 2011, the Exchange Club collected suitcases, bags, and other luggage that was given to Jordan’s Place to distribute. This year’s drive will last the entire month of February.

“We have been so impressed by the tireless efforts of this outreach service,” said Cynthia Hunter.

Hunter is the chairperson for the Project Committee of Exchange Club.

“We are a community service oriented club that focuses on helping families and youth in Hendricks County,” she said. “We are thrilled to be a supporter for an outreach that helps improve the lives of foster children.”

Bags may be dropped off at AAA Hoosier Motor Club in Avon Station, Key Bank in Brownsburg, United Way office in Danville, or at Dewanna Mooneyham American Family Insurance Agency in Avon.

The Exchange Club of Hendricks County meets at noon on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at Charbonos in Avon. Members of the community are encouraged to visit the club meetings for lunch and to find out more about Exchange. The club is also on Facebook.
