PCMS Junior Optimist Club to carol for canned goods

— Members of the Plainfield Community Middle School Junior Optimist Club will soon go Christmas caroling as part of a tradition.

The annual event began many years ago, around the neighborhood where Clarks Creek Elementary School is located. They are also collecting nonperishable food items.

This year, students will carol in their own neighborhoods throughout Plainfield. They will post notes on the doors of homes several days in advance, announcing the singing and collecting.

Club sponsor Joan Effinger said the items collected will be given to PCMS counselors, who then call families in need to pick them up.

The club has about 50 members in it, so Effinger hopes there’s a large turn-out.

“I am not sure how many groups I will get, but my club indicated there was interest,” she said. “At this age, it is another time to do some fun socializing while doing service to the community.”

Other fundraisers the club participates in throughout the year include raising pledges for a bowl-a-thon, working concession stands at athletic events, and hosting a faculty versus students’ basketball game.

The Junior Optimist Club will carol 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9.
