AVON — Joe Sellmer says he always wanted to own a small gun shop in retirement.
Sellmer saw a need in Hendricks County, which has the second largest friends of the National Rifle Association chapter in the state, and chose to fill it.
“Everybody was getting permits, but there was no place to learn to shoot,” he said.
Parabellum Firearms and Indoor Range will celebrate its grand opening from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 17. There will be door prizes, raffles, giveaways, and food and drinks for sale, all benefiting Riley Hospital for Children.
Profire Arms & Supply, Inc. will be on hand with supplies, including full auto machine guns and Red Star ammunition.
While Parabellum offers the community a place to practice and hone their shooting skills, the facility is also a self-defense haven. The self-defense class is aimed at teaching situational awareness and what to do in specific situations such as date rape.
“Young girls are often targetsm” Sellmer said. “We want them to be able to take care of themselves, and know how to get out of an assault or disable their attacker with techniques that can be taught.”
NRA certified and state police trainers lead the safety classes.
“If you don’t succeed in the first self-defense course, we’re going to work with you until you can,” Sellmer guarantees.
Parabellum offers a variety of gun and self-defense classes for all ages. The popular Handgun 101 will teach participants who have no experience with guns how to be safe and shoot properly. More than 30 people have already signed up for the initial course.
“You can come and shoot any one of the guns on the wall and make a decision on what’s best for you,” Sellmer said. “You may decide you don’t want a gun. You may decide it’s not for you, but at least you were able to make an informed decision.”
