Lemons to Lemonade: Celebrate Lemonade Day May 18

State Bank of Lizton helps Boone and Hendricks Counties’ youth become entrepreneurs

CNHI

— Lemonade Day is a free fun entrepreneurial experience: starting, owning, and operating a lemonade stand business.

Entrepreneur and inventor Scott Jones brought Lemonade Day to the Greater Indianapolis area in 2010 and since then more than 30,000 kids have participated — including 15,000 kids last year alone.

“I saw my first Lemonade Day stand three years ago in downtown Indianapolis,” said Rhonda Wiles, Marketing Director at State Bank of Lizton, in a press release. “The little entrepreneur had set her stand next to the Starbucks. She told me all about Lemonade Day and how she was going to pay her parents back for the lemonade loan, save her money, and give some of her profits to the Humane Society. I was hooked. I had to figure out a way that our bank could be a part of this great program.”

Wiles researched the website, contacted Jami Marsh of the Think Forward Foundation, and the push to increase the awareness and participation numbers in Lemonade Day in Hendricks and Boone counties began.

State Bank of Lizton locations are serving as registration and backpack pickup sites in both Hendricks and Boone Counties during regular banking hours. The bank’s employees recently distributed backpacks at the inaugural Hendricks Home Show and plan to register youth and distribute backpacks again at the Boone County Home & Garden Show from 4 to 8 p.m. April 18-20 at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

In each backpack the kids receive two workbooks, an “Entrepreneur’s Workbook” and a “Mentor Guide”. At home the kids work through 14 lessons about how to start, own and operate a lemonade business. Kids also have the opportunity to participate in free workshops and contests (optional) in the Indianapolis area. Participants may choose to apply for their start up capital for their lemonade businesses from Lemonade Day via the new Seed Fund.

For the workshops, contests and Seed Fund visit www.indianapolis.lemonadeday.org.

In addition to the backpack, State Bank of Lizton is offering The Most Valuable Lemonade Lesson of Them All — a $10 promotional deposit for every young entrepreneur who registers and picks up a backpack at State Bank of Lizton, operates a stand on May 18, and opens or adds to a youth savings account at the bank with a minimum of $50. The promotional flyer is required and is available in the Lemonade Day backpacks picked up at the bank’s locations.

The bank has also partnered with the local community foundations to develop a list of local funds that are geared toward kids’ philanthropic interests, although the kids are free to pick  what ever charity they wish. The Hendricks County Flyer, Lebanon Reporter, and Zionsville Times Sentinel have also stepped forward with a Make Your Profits Sweeter promotion for  County youth who operate a stand on Saturday, May 18. The location and hours of the stand will  be published in the paper. (youth names and contact info will not be published). To participate,  youth should submit a name, contact e-mail and phone number, location of stand and open hours  to lemonadeday@flyergroup.com or lemonadeday@timessentinel.com or mail to  Lemonade Day, 8109 Kingston Street, Suite 500, Avon, IN 46123 or lemonadeday@timessentinel.com or mail to 250 S. Elm St. Zionsville, IN 46077.

“We are proud to promote Lemonade Day in our communities and encourage entrepreneurship and saving,” said Wiles. “We will be hosting youth stands at our locations and at the Brownsburg and Lebanon Relay for Life events on Saturday, May 18. We encourage local businesses who wish to host stands at their business locations to contact Marsh at jmarsh@thinkforwardfoundation.org. The outdoor mall Metropolis, provided lemonade stand locations last year and plans to provide opportunities again in Plainfield this year are set. I hope to see lemonade stands all over the place on May 18,” said Wiles.
