Suspect dead after burglary foiled

County officers involved in fatal shooting

PLAINFIELD —

Officers responding to a home invasion shot one suspect that drew a weapon and apprehended another Tuesday night, while the officers and house’s occupants both walked away unharmed.

Plainfield Police Department public information officers Lt. Gary Tanner and Capt. Jill Lees detailed the events after the scene was secured and investigators began to further dissect what happened.

While exact details remained sketchy, it was clear it was the type of incident not seen in Plainfield for a very long time.

“We’ve had some sporadic daytime or business burglaries, but this is probably the first officer-involved shooting in close to 20 years,” Lees said. “This is very rare, and it was a very quick response.”

At approximately 9:27 p.m., officers were dispatched to 270 Andrews Boulevard on a burglary-in-progress call. A Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department deputy and a Plainfield Police Department sergeant responded and arrived just two minutes later.

The officers reported hearing screams within the residence, and advised dispatch that they needed to make entry. As the officers approached the front door, they saw a white male standing there with a firearm. The subject raised and pointed the weapon at the officers as they approached, and the officers fired at the subject, killing him.

The officers then entered the residence, and upon checking it, discovered a second white male suspect. Once the officers cornered him, he surrendered without further incident.

Multiple adults were inside the residence at the time of the attempted robbery, but an exact number of occupants was undetermined as of press time. Officers were originally dispatched after a 911 call came from one of the occupants.

Tanner said there was only a duration of around seven minutes from when the officers received the call to the incident’s resolution.

“The response was amazing,” Tanner said.

The glass front door of the home was completely broken out, but it was unclear whether the gunfire occurred with the door open or shut. The suspect’s weapon type was also unknown.

Names of the suspects were not available, and the officers’ names were temporarily withheld in accordance with department policy.

This story will be updated as information becomes available.
