Struck pedestrian in critical condition

INDIANAPOLIS —

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers responded to a report of a pedestrian that was struck about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on East 38th Street just east of Hawthorne Lane.

When officers arrived, they found a critically-wounded 25-year-old Luke Alberts of Indianapolis lying on the ground. EMS crews arrived and transported Alberts to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

Several witnesses told police that a white Ford vehicle struck Alberts as he rode his bicycle with the flow of traffic east on East 38th Street in the curb lane. The suspect vehicle then reportedly continued east on 38th and shortly afterwards caused another collision on East 36th Street at Alsace Drive with an unoccupied parked vehicle.

Officers immediately apprehended the suspect driver, identified as 24-year-old Kenneth Chowning of Indianapolis. Officers suspect the driver may have consumed alcohol or other illegal intoxicants. Officials say the driver has not yet been arrested but is likely to face preliminary charges after investigators finish their investigation. The facts of this incident will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if formal charges are appropriate.
