UPDATED: High-speed chase starts in Brownsburg

BROWNSBURG — Brownsburg police were involved in a high-speed chase Wednesday that spanned two counties and ended with the arrest of a suspect.

According to information from the Brownsburg Police department, the chase started when the driver was pulled over by a Brownsburg officer on Interstate 74.

The suspect led police on a chase on I-74, then onto U.S. 136 into the Pittsboro and Lizton areas, where at one point the driver struck a North West Hendricks school bus. According to the Brownsburg Police Department, there were three occupants on the bus, but no reported injuries. The chase then continued onto I-74 East and ended on the Northwest side of Indianapolis on Ashway Circle when the suspect crashed into a snow bank. Police said the suspect then exited the vehicle, grabbed a backpack from the trunk and led officers with multiple law enforcement agencies on a chase on foot. During the chase he traversed three neighborhood fences before he was apprehended and taken into custody.

The suspect was later identified as Herman T. McHenry III, 31, from Davenport, Iowa.

Upon search of the vehicle, police found two pounds of marijuana, just less than one pound of crystal methamphetamine, and a 9 mm submachine gun. McHenry is currently in custody at the Brownsburg Police Department, but will be transferred to the Hendricks County Jail. At this time, McHenry is being charged with multiple felonies, including possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, two counts of dealing (class A felonies), illegal possession of a firearm, resisting law enforcement, two counts of battery on an officer, and hit and run. The department expects that there will be further charges to be added as the day continues.
